About The School

California Heights Parent Participation Nursery School (“CHPPNS”) is a teacher-led co-op preschool located in Long Beach that dates back to 1947. CHPPNS has been around for over 75 years because it is an effective and fun way of educating preschool-aged children in our neighborhood!

A parent participation nursery school, is by definition, an organized group of parents working toward a common or mutual benefit. Families who choose to invest their time in a co-op find that they often get much more back than they invest into it. We all share the small and large tasks that make our co-op work well. Our shared goal is our children’s well being

Our Philosophy

At CHPPNS, we encourage children to explore, discover, and deepen their natural interests through meaningful experiences in our outdoor learning environment. Children are given opportunities to engage in a variety of activities that foster creativity, curiosity, problem-solving, and social interaction.

We recognize and appreciate that each child is unique with their own personality, interests, and developmental path. Our teach provides support and guidance while allowing children to progress at their own pace in all areas of development.

CHPPNS is a play-based program where children learn through hands-on exploration, relationships, and experiences. Parents and the teach work together as partners to create an environment that nurtures each child’s growth.

We believe play is a fundamental tool for learning and design our curriculum around the whole child—supporting social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and creative development while helping children build confidence and a lifelong love of learning.

Our Teacher

Karen Huck has over 33 years of experience working in Early Childhood Development. She has previously worked as a teacher and director for 17 years at a co-op in the Sierra Foothills. Co-op's are near and dear to her heart as she loves working with both children and parents. Karen is committed to fostering a positive learning environment for children through effective leadership and mentoring.

When she is not teaching or dog sitting, Karen loves going to the beach, attending her granddaughters’ soccer games, reading, and spending time between family and friends.
